The "Dyer Flyer" was back on track at Illiana Motor Speedway Saturday night
as veteran driver Dave Weltmeyer won the 30-lap late model stock car main event
at the Schererville raceway.
Wheeling his Monte Carlo to the checkered flag, Weltmeyer picked up his third
win in the first four events of the season at the half-mile paved oval.
Joe O'Connor and Bobby Gash led the early laps with Weltmeyer racing by Gash for
the lead on lap 13. With the previous week's feature winner, Pat Kelly, close
behind, Weltmeyer looked pretty much in control until the caution flag waved
with 21 laps complete.
After the restart, Kelly began to pressure Weltmeyer for the top spot. But
Weltmeyer was up to the challenge, taking the victory by a 0.243-second margin.
Mike White finished second, followed by Gash and O'Connor.
"I'll tell you what, (engine builder) Joe Rhyne won the race today," Weltmeyer
said. "You could see that I had some horsepower. I was tight in the corners. His
power was just gassin' on and that won us the race.
"I didn't want to see that yellow (caution flag). The way we set our tire
pressures, we need a lap or two to get some air in our tires. I started them
low, but once we got going we were OK."
Division points leader and track newcomer Rich Dawson scored his second win of
the campaign, winning the 25-lap limited late model headliner over Anthony Danta
and last year's class champion, Joe Fadke. Josh Nelms also won for the second
time this season, capturing the 25-lap Mid American Sportsman feature.
On Illiana's quarter-mile oval, Griffith's Billy Jarrells wheeled his 1988 Monte
Carlo to his first career feature victory, defeating Tommy Prim in the 25-lap
Turbo Stox main event. Another first-time winner, Michael Lindemulder of Cedar
Lake, guided his '96 Nissan "four-cylinder" to the win in the 12-lap Pure Stock
chase.
Crown Point Speedway: Veteran Frank Heckenast became the fourth different
Illinois resident to win an United Midwestern Promoters (UMP)-sanctioned event
this season.
Heckenast, whose racing career dates back to the days at Chicagoland's old Santa
Fe Speedway, scored the win the 30-lap event over fellow Illinois resident
Garrett Slager.
Shane "The Throttle" Cottle of Kokomo was the winner of the 25-lap feature race
for UMP open-wheel modified stock cars. Experienced in sprint cars, midgets and
the modifieds, Cottle finished ahead of last week's winner Jason Hastings.
Illinois' Jay Hamilton defeated Gary's Ron Gibbs in the 20-lap street stock
main, while last year's class champion, Karl Hayes, stopped Jesse Gaylord's win
streak at three by winning the 15-lap mini stock feature.
