Illiana Motor Speedway:

SCHERERVILLE | On March of Dimes Night at Illiana Motor Speedway on Saturday, Dyer's Dave Weltmeyer "marched" to his second consecutive late model feature victory.

Battling with long-time rival Eddie Hoffman in the closing laps of the 25-lap main event, Weltmeyer, after making contact with Hoffman, shoved his Monte Carlo into first place on the last lap and raced to the checkered flag in front of Hoffman and Mike White. Chesterton's Brian Muick finished fourth after leading the race from lap two until the final couple of circuits when Hoffman and then Weltmeyer moved into the top spot.

"(Hoffman) seen me stick my nose in there when he rolled off the bottom," Weltmeyer said. "I stuck my nose in there and he turned left on me. After years of experience racing with the man, I knew I had to just go for it. That was the only chance I had.

"I don't blame him. I probably would have done the same thing. But circumstances were that I had a better car."

Hoffman, with a lot of damage to the left rear corner of his car, commented after the race, "It was what it was. You guys saw it. I can't see what's going on behind me. I don't really know. He (Weltmeyer) got to the left rear. That's all he needs is the left rear quarter."

Rich Dawson garnered top honors in the 25-lap limited late model headliner. Dawson, last year's second-ranking driver in the division, and last week's winner Jack Kalwasinski of Dyer were battling for first place when a slower, lapped car caused Kalwasinski to slow a bit, giving up his side-by-side challenge. Bill Neering of Cedar Lake came home third, followed by John LaFreniere and fastest qualifier and defending champion Anthony Danta.

Sean Matthuis, 16-year-old Mokena, Ill. resident, claimed his first-ever main event victory in the 20-lap Mid American sportsman contest. Slipping past Nick O'Dell with a few laps to go, Matthuis, in his second season of racing stock cars, finished ahead of O'Dell and Chris Cooling.

Tommy Prim was the winner of the 25-lap Turbo Stox feature race on the speedway's quarter mile oval. Prim, who won five features a year ago, scored the win in front of Ed Ligue and Bill Serviss, who was last year's class champion. In Pure Stock competition, also on the quarter mile track, Jim Merriman won a six-lap heat race and then came back and captured the 12-lap feature race, besting Mike Jucius, who pressured Merriman for the lead during the final circuits.

Shadyhill Speedway | Bill Davis of Chesterton was the winner of the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) open-wheel modified feature race at the Medaryville dirt oval. The 66-year-old driver, who has been racing since 1959, bested Jesse Bitterling and last week's winner Bub Patrick in the 20-car, 25-lap contest. For the second week in a row, Dyer's Bobby Brooks was the man to beat in the barefoot mini (stock) division. Brooks was again unbeatable as he won the trophy dash, a heat race and then the 15-lap feature
